Bathroom Window Curtains

Bathrooms are usually quite small rooms which lend themselves to simple window curtains or blinds. As a rule, you do not want to go too far over the top with your bathroom window treatments, in any case, as all the steam in the air can mean that bathroom curtains tend to get dirty quickly and need frequent laundering. On the other hand, don’t waste the opportunity to inject some color with your bathroom window curtains, particularly if you have a plain white bathroom, which most of us do these days.

If possible, match your window curtains with your shower curtain for a coordinated look. Although you can buy vinyl bathroom window curtains, it is not necessary to make a bathroom window curtain waterproof. If you can’t find matching shower curtains, you can always make (or have made) both the curtains for the window and the shower in the same (non-waterproof) fabric and then use a plain white shower curtain lining inside the fabric curtain in your shower. You will also find some window curtain/shower curtain bathroom sets available although it can be tricky to get the exact combination you are looking for in terms of colors and sizes so look for those where the window curtains come in various sizes.

Look for short sill length curtains for your bathroom window as the bathroom needs an informal look. In many cases, with all the fixtures in a bathroom, long curtains would be impractical even if you wanted them. Polyester-cotton or cotton curtains are good choices as these fabrics are generally easy to care for but do make sure that the curtains are pre-shrunk (or that you buy them slightly longer than normal) to allow for shrinkage when you first wash them. An inch or two can make all the difference to curtains looking good or too short. Bear this in mind if you make your own bathroom curtains too and wash and press the fabric before you begin or leave long hems so that you can adjust them after the first laundering.

In general, curtains in the bathroom are for decoration rather than privacy as most bathroom windows have frosted glass and this provides the privacy you need during the day although it is nice to pull the curtains across the window at night to give your bathroom a cozier feel. If, for some reason, your bathroom window has plain glass arrange to have the window replaced or apply adhesive frosted window film to give an opaque effect. Then you can enjoy natural light for most of the day without worrying about being overlooked.

Of course, curtains are not the only choice when it comes to bathroom window coverings. You could consider shutters, blinds and shades of all kinds as these give the required simple look to your bathroom window too. Roller blinds are particularly simple to hang and operate although roman shades would work well too. In general, bathroom curtains have a homelier feel than blinds so they are great for country or family bathrooms. If your bathroom is ultra sleek and contemporary, however, then a blind is probably more in keeping and may be the window covering of choice although simple tab top curtains can work well in a bathroom like this too.

One of the best things to do when you know you need to buy curtains is to start browsing around looking for ideas. Always have your home and the rooms you want to decorate in mind as well as the kind of colors you are looking for. This will help you filter when you do your browsing and cut down your task a bit though it will not stop you noticing anything that you really love.

You do not have to have your full decorating scheme worked out before you choose window coverings because in many cases it isĀ  easier to choose a curtain fabric and then create a color scheme based on the various shades in the material rather than the other way around however it helps to know the kind of colors you like and which may suit your room and to bear in mind any particular theme you might choose such as retro or kids’ novelty theme.

Once you have an idea in your head of the look you want, start viewing websites, take trips to look at fabrics in shops, and flick through some interior design magazines and books and look at the various window treatments.

Chances are you will find a lot of inspiration in these places and you will often come across a fabric or a curtain design that you fall in love with. At that point you normally find out it is way over budget. (Believe me I have been there!) However it’s the inspiration that is important – you have got plenty of ideas and then you can go shopping to get a similar look at a price you can afford.

My recommendation is to shop online for the lowest prices for window curtains – you will also get the best selection of fabrics and curtain options and you can probably recreate the look you fell in love with at a fraction of the price.
